As the setting for Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” this area of the Hudson River Valley leans into its literary and historic past to celebrate Halloween with spine-tingling festivities. Steeped in legend and lore, Sleepy Hollow Country has candlelit gothic mansions, spooky cemeteries, and jack-o’-lanterns illuminating the night sky. It’s the perfect place to celebrate the season of mischief and magic, of fright and fear. But be careful! If you happen to stumble off the beaten path at night—like poor Ichabod Crane—you might just become the Horseman’s next victim.
Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”
To understand the appeal of Sleepy Hollow Country, let’s take a look at the legend that made it famous. In 1820, Washington Irving published “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” a short story set in the valley of the Pocantico River, which is now the village of Sleepy Hollow. The story follows Ichabod Crane, a schoolteacher from Connecticut living in a Dutch enclave along the Hudson River. The superstitious teacher is enchanted by the tale of the ghostly Headless Horseman haunting Sleepy Hollow. In life, the horseman was a Hessian soldier decapitated by a cannonball in the Revolutionary War. In death, he roams the valley on his horse, in pursuit of his lost head.
As Ichabod becomes entangled with the locals, he sets his sights on Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a rich farmer. He isn’t the only one interested in Katrina, however, and makes a rival of Brom Bones, a local rascal. But poor old Ichabod never gets Katrina. On his way home from a party at the Van Tassels, Ichabod encounters the Headless Horseman and disappears forever. Whatever happened to ole Ichabod…? Interestingly, Washington Irving never mentions Halloween in his tale, although the story does take place in autumn and features one very important pumpkin. The tale’s association with the holiday came later, eventually making Sleepy Hollow Country a Halloween destination.
What is Sleepy Hollow Country?
Before we delve into Halloween festivities, let’s talk about Sleepy Hollow Country for a hot second. In the 17th century, Dutch settlers made their home along the Hudson River Valley, in modern-day Westchester County. The Dutch called the Pocantico River—which flows through the area— “Slapershaven,” or “Sleeper’s Haven.” The English derivation of the Dutch name, “Sleepy Hollow,” later referred to the valley of the Pocantico River.
Today, however, we use the term “Sleepy Hollow Country” to describe New York’s lower Hudson River Valley in general, which extends beyond the village of Sleepy Hollow. Therefore, neighboring villages, such as Tarrytown, Irvington, and Croton-on-Hudson, participate in Halloween chills and thrills.
15 Halloween Festivities in Sleepy Hollow Country
Sleepy Hollow Country has a myriad of Halloween festivities to fill up your days and evenings. To make the most of your visit, plan ahead and purchase tickets in advance. While festivities run from September to early November, October is the busiest month. It’s crowded AF and events sell out. If you’re not into the heavy crowds, opt for visiting in September. You’ll still be able to do many of the Halloween-themed events.
1. The Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze
The Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze is a family-friendly adventure that delivers autumn and Halloween vibes with just the right touch of pumpkin spice. At the Blaze, you’ll experience thousands of hand-carved jack-o’-lanterns illuminating the historic grounds of 18th-century Van Cortlandt Manor. From standard jack-o’-lantern faces to iconic artworks and life-sized structures, you’ll quickly see that pumpkins transform into just about anything.
While the Blaze has some spooky elements, it’s not a scary attraction. Don’t get too comfortable, though…to leave the grounds, you’ll have to cross the Headless Horseman Bridge. This is Sleepy Hollow Country, after all.

2. Tarrytown Halloween Parade
Witness the Headless Horseman galloping down Broadway in Tarrytown at the annual Halloween Parade. Starting at Patriot’s Park, the procession of ghouls continues down Broadway and Main Street. In addition to extravagant costumes and floats, the parade has live music, performers, and food. The event is family-friendly, so don’t come dressed as a murderous, chainsaw-wielding clown or with your tatas or booty cheeks hanging out.

3. Haunted Hayride
Hop on a haunted hayride in Sleepy Hollow, where you may just lose your head along the way. Starting downtown, the ride continues down the Albany Post Road (Route 9) past the Old Dutch Church, into Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. The hayride recreates Ichabod Crane’s encounter with the Headless Horseman, with thunderous hoofbeats chasing you through the woods.

4. Sleepy Hollow Cemetery Tours
If cemetery tours don’t scream Halloween fun, I don’t know what does. My fellow tombstone tourists will delight in exploring this 176-year-old cemetery full of history, architecture, sculpture, and natural scenery during spooky season.
Join the Classic Evening Lantern tour to wander the cemetery at night with only a kerosene lantern to light your way. Under the cover of darkness, you’ll visit the resting places of titans of industry Andrew Carnegie and William Rockefeller and enter the cemetery’s receiving vault, where bodies were temporarily stored in the winter.
If you’re a scaredy-cat, no worries, the Classic Daytime Tour is the same route, so you won’t miss a thing. You can also opt for the Original Knickerbocker tour, where you’ll meet Washington Irving at his gravesite and explore his role in shaping American literature. Finally, if murderous tales are more your jam, join the evening Murder & Mayhem tour for a grisly fright.

6. Washington Irving’s Sunnyside
Learn about the father of American short stories at Washington Irving’s Sunnyside. Nestled in a picturesque landscape along the Hudson River, Irving’s whimsical home reflects romantic and naturalistic charm. Originally a 17th-century Dutch cottage, Irving renovated it himself and made it his residence from 1835 until his death in 1859. Although he published the classic tale, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” in 1820, Irving continued writing throughout his life. It’s no surprise that Sunnyside’s gorgeous river views and lush scenery were a source of inspiration for the author.

8. Hulda’s Night at Rockefeller State Park Preserve
Sleepy Hollow is famous for the Headless Horseman, but did you know it also has a legendary witch? 9. Lyndhurst After Dark
Tour a gothic mansion by candlelight to discover 19th-century spiritualism and mystical awakenings. Built in 1838 in the Gothic Revival style, Lyndhurst is the perfect venue to view historic objects and special collections relating to Victorian superstitions. Performers regale you with dark stories and traditions, especially the Spiritualist belief that the dead make contact with the living. Before you were braving the Ouija board at sleepovers, Victorians were holding seances to speak with their deceased loved ones.
Since All Hallows Eve is traditionally the night when the veil between worlds lifts and the dead roam the earthly plane, perhaps you can communicate with the dearly departed at Lyndhurst.

10. The Spirits of Sleepy Hollow Country
Join illusionists Mark Clearview and Nick Wallace in an evening of magic and mystery. Local lore combines with illusion and the supernatural in this spellbinding performance. Clearview and Wallace even attempt to communicate with the spirits of Sleepy Hollow, including Hulda the Witch, the Headless Horseman, and the British spy Major John André, who met a grisly fate at the end of a hangman’s rope.

11. Historical Society, Inc. Walking Tours
Throw a pinch of history into your Halloween festivities by joining a walking tour by the Historical Society, Inc. Choose from one of three TarryHollow Tours exploring the villages of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. The first is Sleepy Hollow, Irving, and the Old Dutch Church, where you’ll learn about the history of the Hudson River Valley’s Dutch settlers and the American Revolution in Sleepy Hollow Country. The tour includes entry into the Old Dutch Church and Burying Ground, where you’ll meet historic figures who inspired Washington Irving’s Legend.
The second tour, Walking Through Time (Tarrytown), delves into the history of Tarrytown, its residents, and historic events. The third, Walking Through Time (Sleepy Hollow), is similar, but of course, focuses on the village of Sleepy Hollow.

12. The Old Dutch Church & Burying Ground
Visit the Old Dutch Church & Burying Ground, founded around 1685. Despite the British taking possession of New Amsterdam and renaming it New York in 1664, Dutch heritage remained strong in the Hudson Valley until about 1800, as evidenced by Dutch gravestone inscriptions. The 3-acre burying ground is the supposed resting place of the Headless Horseman, but also of citizens who inspired characters in Irving’s legend, such as Catriena Ecker van Tessel.
As you visit the Old Dutch Church & Burying Ground, be respectful, because it still has an active congregation belonging to the Reformed Church of the Tarrytowns. To explore the site on your own, purchase Tales of the Old Dutch Church Burying Ground as a guide.

13. Sleepy Hollow Street Fair
Attend the Sleepy Hollow Street Fair, presented by the Sleepy Hollow-Tarrytown Chamber of Commerce. Over 145 vendors will be selling arts, crafts, food, and beverages. It’s also the perfect time to explore downtown Sleepy Hollow’s local shops and eateries. Additionally, this is a family-fun affair with live entertainment and activities, so bring your kiddos and pooches. Although the fair is in September, there will be Halloween-inspired items, and the Headless Horseman might just make an appearance.

15. The Headless Horseman Files
Investigate the grounds of Philipsburg Manor to solve once and for all what happened to poor Ichabod Crane. In this live-action whodunit experience, you’ll meet “Legend of Sleep Hollow” characters Katrina Van Tassel, Brom Bones, and Hans Van Ripper. Hulda the Witch also makes an appearance, and you’ll have to decide who was responsible for Ichabod’s fate. This family-friendly experience requires active participation from you, as you gather and analyze clues to reveal the culprit.

Bonus: Headless Horseman: Hayrides and Haunted Attractions
Do you want to be scared shitless this Halloween? If being chased by a maniacal scarecrow with a hacksaw is your jam, take a drive up to Ulster Park for Headless Horseman: Hayrides and Haunted Attractions. This venue features haunted houses, hayrides, and mazes, where costumed actors outdo each other to elicit the most screams. It’s about an hour and twenty minutes’ drive from Sleepy Hollow, but if you’ve got a car and time to spare, it’s worth it. My hubby and I bring friends and family every year to experience the mayhem, and it never fails to disappoint.

Where Can You See the Headless Horseman?
Even though the Headless Horseman lacks a head, he’s still ready for photo ops. The horseman is known to appear throughout Sleepy Hollow Country’s Halloween festivities. Be on the lookout for the legend at the Tarrytown Halloween Parade, the Haunted Hayride, the Sleepy Hollow Street Fair, Twilight Village, Hulda’s Night, the Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze, and Irving’s Legend.
Getting Around Sleepy Hollow Country
Sleepy Hollow Country is about an hour north of New York City, via driving and train. Driving is the best way to explore Sleepy Hollow and its neighboring villages in Westchester County. Each of the “Hudson River Towns” (they’re really villages) is unique in character, cuisine, and Halloween offerings, so I advise you to explore them. Just be aware that traffic can be a nightmare in October due to all of the festivities. Plan ahead and give yourself enough time to drive to events requiring timed tickets.
If you don’t have a car, you can hop around on local buses and the Metro-North Railroad. Additionally, Grand Central Terminal is about an hour away via Metro-North, so you could easily head into the Big Apple during your stay if time allows.
Alternatively, if you’re only interested in exploring Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, you could do so by walking around or taking short cab rides.
